Lunar Rovers
There is something about the Apollo astronauts and the Lunar Rovers that connects deeply with an important part of the American mythos. Below are links to more information on the once and future Rovers.
Drivers of this Lunar Rover were subject to what was probably one of the first Prime Directives: Do not drive anywhere from which you are not prepared to walk back. When the Lunar Rover was driven out on a mission, it would be taken directly to the furthest point. The crew would work their way back to the LEM, moving closer as their oxygen was used up and their critical radius was reduced. The enhanced range provided by the Rovers contributed appreciably to the scientific success of the later Apollo missions.
You can just hear them going on about all the LER’s amenities at the Old Astronaut’s Home. An SUV makes it to the moon!
For those who want to get a closer view, there is the LRO. However, even with an orbiting altitude of only 50 kilometers, it has a top-end resolution of about 46 centimeters. It is going to take more than a little superresolution magic to resolve much detail on the parked Rovers. It will be interesting to see what pixel tricks NASA comes up with.
